well a few weeks ago my fuel heater went so i just unplugged that and used a block heater every night. i just put in new fuel heater and the #30 30 amp fuse is not blowing and the glow plug light on the dash is turning on so i know the fuse isnt being blown. last night i didnt use the block heater to see if the new fuel heater would work and it seems to not be working. any ideas? its 32 deg. out right now and ive never had this problem when my old heater did work. i have started it with the new heater installed yesterday.
That fuel bowl heater won't have any effect on starting. Sounds like you need to check the glow plug relay and ohm out the glow plugs. That's where I'd start.
Your fuel heater does not help on a cold start. I would test your glow plug relay. One big post on it should have around 12 volts all the time and the other big post should have voltage when you turn the key. The gpr will stay on up to two minutes. If that checks out then test your glow plugs. Make sure your batteries and connections are all good as well.
^^^^ What they said. Plugging the truck in has absolutely nothing to do with the fuel bowl heater. Plugging it in warms the engine coolant. The fuel bowl heater warms a few ounces of fuel out of the 30 or so gallons of diesel you have in your truck. Check the GPR.
