well to turn it up. take the oil fill spout off. its 2 1/2 inch bolts that hold it on. turn the motor over with either a ratchet at the harmonic ballancer or by jumping the solenoid. until the timing dowel is at 12 o-clock. then there are 2 1/4 inch bolts in the passenger side of the pump. ( before you take them out put a rag underneath the pump because about half a pint of diesel is going to come out) then slide in a 3/16th allen wrench in there and turn it up a flat. ( 1/6th of a turn ) then re assemble it, and fire her up. make sure you hold it at a bit of a high idle to make sure its still getting fuel.

ive never had to crack the lines at the injectors.

It has absolutely nothing to do and will fix nothing that has anything to do with your air in lines problem. LOL I was born and raised in texas they used to raise them a little brighter apparently, if your blowing black now all you can possibly do with turning your fuel up without other upgrades or fixing the air intake or boost problem is reducing the life of your motor and lowering the contents of your wallet.

What im saying is that he can have his pump set the same as yours and their's not going to be as much black smoke. Since theirs more air going into his motor, more of that fuel is going to burnt and turned into power. If he wants just as much black smoke as you he needs to ditch the turbo or turn the pump up more than you. At that point I'd be worried about melting pistons though......

It would have been great to have had the internet when I was young or even when I started running these pickups. There is a wealth of information available for anyone who will use it. It is sad that people have it and even use it and read it enough and still do not have a clue about how there engines work and try there best to screw them up because someone aqaints smoke with power. And I don't care if you live in texas montana or alberta or bum f$%#$% egypt black smoke does not make power it hurts it.
And while I hate the epa and what they have done to this country we have to have them to a point and have to live with all the laws they manage to get passed, which is the reason I can't buy a new IDI today idiots without a clue brings this on and the laws has cost every person in the US loads of money no matter where you live you are paying for what idiots did before you came along and others will pay all their lives for our actions now. Every time the government passes another clean air mandate it affects and costs everybody the same. If it meant 1/2 horsepower more if my motor was rolling smoke out mine would be doing but since htere is no advantage at all and many disadvantages to it the least of all is air quality it is a shame that the info people have does not sink in.

Plain and simple, black smoke is wasted fuel. It's caused by incomplete combustion of the fuel due to not enough air. This means that you are not getting the full potential energy out of the fuel injected.
Yes, my 6.9 and my Cummins do smoke, but, minimal amounts in both cases, and I'd like to be able to clean it up completely on both of them with even more fuel injected... LOL

Mind you I am only 24 YO!! and in college for big rig diesels one thing they kept saying black smoke=wasted fuel. and on top of that it pisses me off when i see a truck blow black smoke because it isn't cool and i see a perfectly good motor circling the drain!!!

Well rodney I can tell you if you stick to the school and get you a reputation on diesels you will be able to make a good living anywhere you want to. We will need mechanics as long as people need food.

I also agree with you guys! We have enough kids around here tuning their rigs to blow smoke with the lightest touch of the pedal. People are starting to complain to me about my "old diesel" polutting. I have mine turned up 1/2 a flat and a cowl intake and it only smokes on wot. It really p***es off when people roll smoke to be cool and give the rest of use a bad name. I figure that I can pull about what they can with out all the modding but just not as fast. Aleast i will still have an engine that runs a couple years from now while they are down.

allright here i can solve all of this. buy the truck and turn it back down. it is for sale otherwise quit your bit**in. its my truck its my choice. all i know is that after i turned it up it had more power. sure it would have alot more if i had the 2500 bucks for a turbo but hey guess what i dont, so unless some one wants to either A buy the truck, or B donate a turbo STFU have a nice day
