Vin on truck I'm restoring F10YCM67403. Vin on donor truck F10GCM71332.
What does the "M" stand for in each vin. The way I read the rest of this is: Restoring truck, F100,360,Ontario, number 67403.
Donor truck: F100, 302, Ontario, number 71332.
Both built in 09 1971 according to door jamb tags.
Is this interpretation correct?
Looks about right according to the competitive vin decoder.

The serial number is the last six digits of the VIN. In these cases, M is the first digit.
1971 Serial Number Range: J70,001 thru M30,000.
1972 Serial Number Range: M30,001 thru Q00,000.
By the serial numbers, both these trucks are 1972's.
Production Date: 9/1971 = 1972 vehicle.
Since new vehicle introduction time begins in September of the previous year, assembly begins in August.
btw: C = Oakville, Ontario Canada Assembly Plant. The fact that both these trucks were assembled in Canada, does not mean they were only sold new in Canada.
Look on the Warranty Plate's of these trucks for their DSO code, post what they are.
When decoded, the DSO will tell you what Ford District Sales Office's in what cities...the trucks were originally ordered from.

Bill, thanks for the info. The DSO on both trucks is 55. I know for a fact that my Great Grandpa's truck was purchased at Bill Hayes Ford Portageville, Missouri. It's engraved in large letters across the rear step bumper. That's SE Missouri, 191 miles south of St. Louis. The donor truck I believe was sold new at White Ford Sales Willow Springs, Missouri. There's a sticker that looks as old as the truck on the center of the tailgate. Willow Springs is in south central missouri slightly east of the resort town of Branson.
I do have a rear axle question. I pulled the id tag off my Grandpa's 72 today. Top line reads WDM-AG 1GB. Second line reads 3 00 9 343A. I believe the tag on the 72 donor truck has been removed before I purchased it.

Bill, I understand the production date. My dad is retired from the Ford Assembly plant in Hazelwood, (St. Louis), Missouri. He work there from 1965-2003, 38 years, no A/C. Plant was closed in 2006, bulldozed in 2009. He always got the first two weeks of July off for model change/retooling. Occasionally, they would be off a little longer. I remember summer of 83 they swithched the plant from Crown Vic/Grand Marquis to Aerostar production. Only plant in North America to build the Aerostar. Plant was down for couple months. Last model they produced was the Explorer/mountaineer line.
Bill is correct with the time line of production build, model year generally runs Sept. to Aug. however sometimes it does vary. We are going to launch the new Edge/MKX (Oakville Assembly Plant) at the end of March this year 2010 and will be the 2011 model thus being almost 5 months early.
WDM-AG = Ford 9" Rear Axle / 3.00-1 / 4 pinion conventional (non Limited Slip) / 3300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity / Large axle bearings / Slim Line differential bearings.
1GB = Assembled the second (B) week of July (G), 1971 (1).
55 = St. Louis MO Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealers ordered the trucks from.
Look on the Warranty Plate of the donor truck for its AXLE code, post what it is.
FYI: The 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog is avaiilable on a CD from hipoparts.com for $22.00.
This catalog has 4849 pages of text, 1961 pages of illustrations.
Since every part is illustrated, the catalog can also be used as an assembly/dis-assembly manual.
Bill, I'm going to order the catalog for sure. The warranty plate on the 1972 donor truck has axle code of 08. Is that a 3.50?
Also, how does the original axle of my Grandpas truck match up with a 302/C4 set up?

08 = Ford 9" Rear Axle / 3.50-1 / non Limited Slip / 3300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.
3.00-1/302/C4 will give decent gas mileage, but away from the line, it'll be gutless, slow as molasses.
IMO, I'd leave it alone. Gas may be somewhat cheap...now, but that will not always be the case, as there's only so much oil to go around.

Bill, Glad to hear I'll get decent gas mileage. Once the truck is restored, it's just going to be a weekend recreational driver, so gas mileage is better than performance. We already frequent the gas station too often with my two company trucks, a 2006 E350 with a 12' utility box, and a 04 F350 4 whhel drive with a V10.
Thanks for your help.
