Carb problem going up hills

I have a 76 F-100 (360, 2BBL Motorcraft carb). I know I've got a vacuum problem however, when I'm stop on hill (going up) and give it gas it dies. It will start back up with heavy accleration. What could cause this?

It may not be your carb. If your vacuum advance is not working properly then when you push the accelerator from an idle you will get a small hesitation. On flat ground this can be barely noticable, however, when going uphill you may be pushing the accelerator harder and the barely noticable stumble may become a stall.

This can be compounded if your accelerator pump is not working properly. Too much or too little fuel from the accel. pump combined with improper vacuum advance will kill an engine as you accelerate away from idle.

Try this. Let your truck idle for 20 seconds. Smash the accelerator and see what it does. If it dies then your problem could be both the carb and vacuum advance.

Hook up your timing light and check your advance at idle. Then crack your throttle and slowly increase your RPMs to 2,000 and watch how your timing advances. If it initially retards then you have found your problem.

Good Luck

Bruce
