I have a 76 f-150 with a 302, the other day i was carring a load which had the back end sagging a little, as i was going up a fairly steep hill the truck started to backfire through the carb and loose power.
Its done the same thing twice since. Always on a steep grade...
As soon as i hit the top of the hill, it ran like a champ....
the mechanical fuel pump on the block is new.
the carb is almost new.
Any ideas on things for me to check would be very appreciated.
On a real steep grade with the truck loaded down and high float level in the bowl. Fuel might be flowing out of the overflow tube and straight down the carb. if this is the case, adjusting your float may correct it. There are some new carbs on the market that have the overflow tubes connected so the fuel flows from one bowl to the other rather than straight down the carb.
did you check your fuel gauge? on a steep hill with a heavy load most of your fuel would flow to the back of the tank possibly causing a lack of redily available fuel for the engine! just a thought.
