My truck has a factory ford turbo that I have put a custom downpipe on but still has the stock outlet housing. I am pretty happy with it, but I would like to see more boost on the highway. Right now im getting about 2-2.5 going about 55. How can I get this number closer to 4? Will the upgraded outlet make any significant difference in that? Does anyone know of any upgraded compressor wheels or things like that?
Shorten the wstegate rod. When you do this, hold the rod so it can't turn, an turn the end piece. If the rod turns it will tear the diaphram and ruin the actuator. My 85 was getting about 2 lbs @ 65 mph I shortend the rod by 6 turns now I'm getting around 5-6 lbs.
Cruising you really can't you will only make boost under load. If you will notice in nuetral you can wind her up romp on it whatever and it will not make boost. cruising on the road will vary between 0 and usually around 3 if you are pushing a bad wind or pulling a grade it should go up in relation to how much more fuel it takes to hold your speed. the lower the boost the higher your fuel mileage is while on the highway.
I have the rod so that 9 psi is the max, which is right where I want it. And how would more boost be less fuel mileage? Because in my thinking more boost=more fuel burned which= less wasted fuel which= better fuel mileage. Something must be wrong with my logic lol.
Lol okay i guess I can see some logic in that. But some people say that on the highway with an ats turbo they get around 4 psi. How is that so? Is is because I have the factory outlet still?
Well ive got a 4 inch straight pipe, the up pipe wrapped, and the fuel about one flat short of being maxed out. Ive got a k&n filter so I should be getting plenty of air in. Im thinking that it must be the stock outlet that is holding me back.
When I floor it it will jump to about five and then keep climbing till it opens the wastegate at 9. The reason I want better numbers on the highway is because it looks like I have a bit of soot coming out at that speed. When I take off there is a tiny bit of smoke, then it clears up when I get to about 3 psi. But then when I let off at 55 it goes back down to about 2 and it smokes a little bit going down the highway. So my thinking is that a pound or two more and I will burn off that little bit of excess.
Egts running 55 are 450-550. Yes I have the stock fuel pump, about one flat short of maxed out, so plenty of fuel. Downpipe I have a custom bent 2.5 inch pipe out to 4 inch exhaust.
