Hello, I have a '97 F250 Powerstroke and have been having trouble with the starter. Sometimes the starter will not engage, it just just spins. I can turn it off and count to 10 and then turn it on and count to 10 before I put the switch in the star position and it will start. I might not have any more problems for two days. Then it will start again. I replaced the starter twice over the last year and it starts first time. Then does this all over again, starter is a NAPA lifetime. It has 232,000 miles on it and no ring gear noise at all when it is turning over. I added a extra ground directly to the starter from the battery, no luck. Added a new solenoid, no luck. Increased the size of the wire going from the starter to the solenoid, no luck. Any ideas? Help!!
Steve

Yea, That was my first thought too. I replaced it with the heavy duty NAPA switch. How about the Park / Neutral switch and the stater key switch? Can they be cleaned or maybe need to be relaced? I tried jump starting the solenoid one time when it was stuck and it didn't help at all.
i had some problems with a starter on mine a few months back. The bendix would not fully disengage until the truck had been running for 5-10 seconds. Made one hell of a racket and damaged my flexplate. Went through 3 different starters from the parts store until I finally got one that worked fine. I was very pissed off, but did get a new flexplate out of it. Hopefully you get it figured out.
I know your pain with the starter spinning and not connecting to the flywheel. It just started happening to me today. I just replaced the batteries and cables, just to have this problem.
I'll pull it apart tomorrow and clean it, hopefully it will help. I'll let you know what I find BigDude. I'll try to take pictures with my phone also.
Doesn't it sound like a missing tooth on the flywheel?
Seen (heard) this many times.
If you repalce it with another new NAPA starter and it still does it, I'd pull the inspection cover off and rotate motor by hand and make sure the flywheel is in good shape.
same here on a 97 psd, went through a replaced all the battery cables, alt, and removed the starter to bench test it.hooked some jumper cables to a battery outside of the truck to inspect functionality of the bendix.Although it functioned well,it still spins when installed.a big ?!?!?!??!?!?!
I took the starter off and the flywheel looked great. The bendix gear showed some wear, but I need to find out what was going on. I pulled the transmission back and took the ring gear/flywheel off and it had 3 worn spots on it where there were no teeth. I replaced the flywheel and put another starter on and now everything is perfect. I have another problem I can't figure out. I had to replace the fuel sending unit on the front tank because it would not regester. Now it has quit working again. You ever heard of this happening?
