I took the starter off and the flywheel looked great. The bendix gear showed some wear, but I need to find out what was going on. I pulled the transmission back and took the ring gear/flywheel off and it had 3 worn spots on it where there were no teeth. I replaced the flywheel and put another starter on and now everything is perfect. I have another problem I can't figure out. I had to replace the fuel sending unit on the front tank because it would not regester. Now it has quit working again. You ever heard of this happening?
What did you do to get at the top of that tank? Drop the tank or pull the bed?
same problem except when starter tried to engauge big screetch. Flywheel has 4 bad spots with worn teeth.
Also I went to an electric motor repair shop and started talking about the " bendix ", he about had a fit, bendix is only a name brand that happens to make most of the old school starter DRIVES. He had to inform me that Bendix also made many other parts! But he wasn't A hole about it. Took my starter apart look at everything put back together with no new parts and said that wasn't the issue. No charge!!!

My rear tank does this and I'm trying to recall what it is. Something like if the gauge drops to E then it's a bad power wire/connection, if it goes past Full it's a bad ground. Or vice versa, I can't remember. If it's just stuck at E and wiggling the wires don't make it move at all it could also be a pinhole in the float, as mentioned, and the float sank. I've been there, too.
