Hello everyone, I just joined the site and have a kinda broad question. I going this weekend to look at 1971 F600 dump. This would be the first of this size truck I have bought and wondered if there was any known issues with these trucks that I sould pay close attention to while looking at it.
Thanks to everyone here that puts their time and effort into the site.
Wheels-- split rims with 8.25 x 20s? You need to find a truck tire shop to deal with those.
Brakes--doing a rear brake job is not for the faint of heart. A special large wrench is needed for the retaining nut.
Brakes--make sure they work and check for leaking wheel cylinders.
Two speed rear axle--learn how to shift it. It DOES NOT shift like a transmission. You CAN NOT downshift it under deceleration. If you are lucky, the instructions are still on the driver side sun visor. Make sure it works or a hefty discount must be figured.
Power--maybe a 330? It will do the job, but keep in mind there is a governor on it for a reason. (ditto 361 ft as well) Not hot rod motors, so look for about a 65 mph max with a 330.
Post more when you get it. Seems to me there are several of this or similar vintage on the boards here recently.
Looks to have a 330 engine, they are a good strong engine if in good shape
Check it for gear noises in trans and rear end and trans should shift smoooth
check all springs for broken leafs
in any of them check for leaks
Brakes are a fairly big deal, pedal should bre close to the top with a solid feel but not hard
Check condition of bed floor and sides and that the dump raises fairly swift and smooth with no leaks
Tire wear and condition should also be taken into consideration, they are pretty expensive
Went and looked at the 1971 today and it was junk. The parking brake was disconnect and missing parts, the carb was leaking ever where, the cab floor was gone an the roof had a piece of paneling covering the rusted through holes.
My '77 shop manual shows the following:
(F60)= F600 GVW range split.
(D)= 330-2V-X.D.
(Y)= there is no Y code for assembly plants listed.
(CC1292)= serial number. Although my book shows one letter and 5 numbers, this will also tell you which month the truck was built.
I could probably decode the body, trans, and axle codes for you if you post them.
