So I am buying this dump truck, it is a 1971 F600. I would like to find out information on the axles and engine. I have a picture of the door tag, would one of the other tags possibly have more information? I know the truck has a 361 v8, but other than that I don't know. Is there a way to tell the transmission? It has a gear shifter, would that be for the axles or the trans, how would I tell? Any help is apperciated. Vin is F61ECL86971
This will get you started until one of the guys comes on, with more info: http://fordification.com/tech/VIN71.htm
of course that link only covers up to F350, but some info may apply.
Yeah I had found that link, I got the vin decoded but it just tells me that the truck is a 1971 F600 with a 361 v8 built in June. From the P.O. I know that the truck has a dump body with a two-speed rear end. But he didnt tell me how to shift it.
1964/72 Ford used trans code "A" for:
64/65 Ford 3 speed manual.
64 5 speed Fuller SW74.
64/72 New Process 435 *******
66/67 5 speed Dana (Spicer) 8052.
The "B" in F2B stands for 5500# front axle.
"F2" stands for 2 speed Eaton model 15201. 15000#. 5.83/8.12 ratios. There should be a switch on the shifter with a red ****. **** up is for one ratio and **** down is for the other. You don't have to shift the rear end unless you are carrying a heavy load. I would suggest clutch pedal down when you shift the rear end. Hopefully the shift mechanism still works.
I guess Ford couldn't make up their mind. My 64/72 Ford Truck slide T1 dated Jan 1975 shows these codes for the New Process 435:
Code A is 64/72,4 speed, Synchronized, New Process, 435 (General Information page 75)
Code N is 64/65,4 speed, Synchronized, New Process, 435 (General Information page 76)
So 1964 and 65 could have had either code on the warranty plate for the New Process 435. Maybe A was for 600 series and heavier and N was 350 and lighter. Who knows.

FoMoCo confusion:
1965 F100/350 used the N TRANS code for the NP 435, and...
1965 F100/350 used the D VIN engine code for the 352 2V .. 1966/67 F100/350 used the Y VIN engine code for the 352 2V, and...
1964/65 330 2V M/D; 330 2V H/D & 361 2V FT engines used different VIN engine codes than 1966/78's used for these FT engines.
I am not positive about the F600 because the flywheel and transmission could have been different than F100-F350. I do know there are 2 different spline counts used on the 300: 164 tooth for the ~14" flywheel and 184 tooth for the ~15.5 fly wheel. If you have the old one and it just fried but didn't have major wear on the gears then Napa ought to match the numbers on it. I would have to imagine it's this one though... https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1001442
