You can use a cable or a rod. You can do without the kickdown if you don`t mind not being able to kickdown a gear for passing. However if you do this the kickdown lever on the trans needs to be zip tied in the off position.
ok, the more people tell me things, the more i get confused. i want to put a cable on the lever that shifts between PRND21. is the other one the kickdown? this truck will bo off-road alot so its gonna need to downshift when i need it to automaticaly.
It's not a kickdown rod on the C-6. It is throttle valve cable. It has to have it or it will not last long. the rod was used on carbureted models and the cable on FI engines. Without it it will not want to shift right and will burn up.
You should have two levers on the side of the transmission. One connects to the shift lever on the steering column so that you can shift the trans into drive or reverse or whatever. This lever on the trans will be hard to move and will "click" as you move it from say park to reverse. The other lever is for the kickdown linkage and it connects back to the throttle linkage and should move easily when you rotate it at the trans.
For shift points the vacuum supply is important but if the kickdown lever is fully "on" even with good vacuum the trans will not shift untill nearly full throttle.
If you want just zip tie the kickdown lever at the trans fully off (fully clockwise if I remember right) and with proper vacuum the trans should shift normally.

so im gonna need a cable on the gear selector and the kickdown? the kickdown one comes from the throttle? i think i know what i might have to do but im still lost

my best choice is just to ziptie it in the off position then? and it will shift normaly so it can still jump to a lower gear so i can pass and downshift in the woods?
With no kickdown connected you will probably have to downshift with the shift lever for passing.
You should be able to get a kickdown cable from lokar to fit your application.
You could also consider a floor shift instead of the column shift which might be cool.
