The Alt. gauge in my 89 F150 doesn't work at all. I see 2 plug-ins on the Alternator, one on the side and one on the buttom (buttom one can't be removed without removing the Alt.) witch one would be the one for the gauge?
I tested the alternator with my battery load tester and it charges fine.
None of wires on the alternator are for the gauge.
The main large cable from the alternator to the solenoid acts as a shunt. You tap into it at two different places about 3 or 4 feet apart. These two wires are ran to each side of your gauge.
If the voltage gets to large on these two small wires you can burn a trace into on the back of the cluster and then the gauge no longer works.
But I did not think that a 89 had an amp gauge for the alternator. I thought you had an voltmeter on the dash.
