One more engine Question

Originally I had asked about a shortblock and whether the heads were compatible. My truck is a '95 F250 with a 5.8 351 in it. The guy I was going to buy the shortblock from now want to sell the engine whole. The engine I would buy is a 1990 5.8 from a F250. I checked a couple sources and they said it would work as long as I use my Intake Manifold (mine has air going right into intake and not head). The only other differences would be that I would have to use a different rear main seal, hole for knock sensor would need to be tapped out, and my accessories.

Just wanted to check to get one more opinion before I bought it.

Thanks,

Rich

The motor will work but it won't be as powerful as the one you're replacing(smaller cam).
The intake manifolds, rear seal, and accessories are all identical, and I'm guessing you are confusing the EGR and air injection(smog) systems. EGR is a straight tube between the passenger exhaust manifold and the EGR valve just behind the throttlebody. Smog system uses an air pump on the passenger side of the motor to pump air into the back of the heads or the exhaust manifolds via a mess of valves and hoses. Ford had at least 3 different versions for this for some unknown reason but they all function the same and can be totally eliminated if you don't have visual smog inspections. If you have to keep it the tidyest system uses a tube across the back of the motor and the valves are mostly hidden behind and below the motor.

I just completed a swap the opposite way in my truck - 95' engine into 90' truck. I had to swap the wiring harness between motors and also the distributer ( different plug configuration) Make sure you mark the rotor and base before you pull the distributors (I am passing along something I learned the hard way) I know the smog thing was a pain in the butt. If you can eliminate the old manifolds I would, I ran into trouble with them being "sprung" and did not fit right going back on. I plan to use shorty headers when I get the cash. The alternators were also slightly different but I think I just used the new harness and removed the old. Get as much harness as the guy will give you!

Good luck

Drew
