Ok i finally got my '86 running with a few problems first i have air intrusion thinking injector return lines or where i have had to repair fuel lines no biggie there.
I have a few electrical gremlins to work out not a big issue there.
But it seems like she is running like a dog. When i have her running the motor sounds good and when I crack each injector I get a miss on each one. and on the road i get a top speed of about 55 in 4th before it sounds like i am over revving. I would need to check the Gear ratio on the rear end and on the tranny.
Just seems like i have great low end but nothing on the high end.
Any ideas before i shell out $500 on injectors a pump and install kits to go with them?
what's her RPM @ 55? or you have no tach?
the IDI puts out her max hp at 3k rpm.so if you go over that, your dropping ponies.
tho i dunno how fast.i cant find a chart.
that should take some steep gears to put you up there tho with a 4th gear.wow, maybe someone before you, really geared her down for hauling seriously.
yeah.don't buy anything until you find out what short of gearing you have going on there.
Sorry no tach wishful thinking though. We've had her for 5 yrs and my father payed $800 so can't complain. The PO swapped the rear end from 4.10 to a 3.11 i believe because the top speed tapped out was 55 but it would haul anything under the sun.
Ok mine that has 4.10 gears I seldom run over 55 with it. It will actually run 75 before the govenor stops it but over 55 it changes the fuel mileage lots. and sounds like it is fixing to leave the ground.
These motors have more low end than they due top end I think peak torque is around 1400 rpms then starts back down, but at 55 it should be peppy.
Check to see if your fan clutch is locked up. Another thing to check is your muffler if it still has the original there is a good chance it is rusted inside and half stopped up and they were very inadequate new. The pipe unbolts ahead of the muffler unbolt it and see if it picks up power these things have to breath.
Are you running out of RPM @ 55 or simply worried about the noise and backing off? Either way, it seems unlikely that you would have any problems holding 60 or even 70 with 3.11 gears. I am stumped on this one.
With all the problems with this motor i am afraid of doing more damage to it than has already done it just seems sluggish. I may just be paranoid of hurting my baby since i just got her running again.i have unhooked the exhaust before and she did get some extra pep maby i will try it again and see what happens
he could have put 4:88's or 5:13's or somewhere around that in there if he was carrying some serious weight/pulling and wanted her to just go slow and easy but whatever she had on her back or hooked to her was going with.
low numbers 3:??:1 would be more in the direction for cruising speeds macman.(higher numbers= lower gears.)
Tranny is 1 to 1 in high gear with 4.10 gears it will top out around 75 mph max.
If he changed the gears to cruise faster the most popular gears are 3.55 and it would top out around 85. Check your speed many people that swap the rearends do not recalibrate the speedo so yours may be 10 mph off.
No tach Sorry I am running 285 75 16s front and rear. With all the rain we have been having i haven't been able to get under to check the ratio. (a concrete slab would be nice)

OK i just ran to town with her with my wife behind me found she is running 15MPH over what she is reading so running at 60 i am really running 75 so not too bad plus i found that the Exaust manifold is disconnected on the driverside so it sounds really really loud on the hiway. plus i have an air intrusion problem i need to track down. also it looks like the IP is set dead center. so timing is on my todo list.
