P0683 code with TS Performance flip chip

Hello,
I recently installed the TS Performance 6 position flip chip on my 2000 Ford Excursion. The device functions properly as far as increased power goes. However, I now have a check engine light.

The chip is programmed as follows:
1. Stock
2. Hi-idle
3. 50 hp
4. 75 hp
5. 100 hp
6. 140 hp

I get these two codes: P0683, and P0670. I believe they are related to each other. I have no symptoms of anything being wrong. Starts easy, and runs fine. The strange part is, when I disconnect the battery (killing power to everything), and then reconnect the battery, I only get these codes after I have started the engine one time, and then turn it off. In other words, the very first time I run the engine after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, I don't get any codes. I can drive all day long and won't get the code until I turn the engine off, and restart it. From then on the check engine light stays on until I do the battery disconnect sequence again.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help,
Scott

They are both GPCM (Glow Plug Control Module) fault codes.

I take it you never saw these codes before the TS Chip install.

At this point the best thing to do is remove the chip to see if that is causing the codes.

Both codes listed are for your glow plugs, I would start with a loose connections at the GPR, or even bad relay. I dont think the problem is related to your chip..

That is correct. I did not have these codes until I installed the chip. I will remove the chip and see if they go away. My gut feeling is they will. What baffels me is, if it is a communcations problem with the glow plug module, why don't I get these codes the very first time I apply battery power, and start the engine?

I don't understand why it seems to work correctly the very first time I apply power and start then engine. This is very reproducable. The codes only show up the second time I start the engine. I can drive all day with no codes the very first time I start the engine after connecting the battery.

I'm just as baffled about this as you are.

Some codes take a few cycles or a certain amount of time/miles to set after a reset. I had a code on my Ranger and HAD to get inspected before I had time to fix it. My buddy told me to take the battery terminals off, drive for like 20 miles without shutting it off, then bring it to him to get inspected. He read the OBD-II and it all passed. The next cycle of the key, the CEL came back on. It was that EGR sensor thing. I forget what it's called, but it was a common failure on that engine.

That is the only thing I could come up with. I have cleaned them twice, maybe, the third time is the charm.

I just installed the same chip with same tunes in my ride. Hope I don't have a problem with the codes. So far so good. This chip is alot hotter than my superchips! Good luck with your problem.

I'm aware this thread is six years old, but did you ever find the cause of this?

Just installed the TS chip and my 7.3 is doing the EXACT same thing, no codes after battery disconnect and all.

Likely causes:
  • This is a TS chip for a truck or Excursion with the Glow Plug Control module. If you don't have a GPCM, then you will get this alarm until the chip is reprogrammed for a vehicle with a Glow Plug Relay.
  • The connection from the PCM to the chip is not making 100% contact.
  • It's a coincidence - your GPCM chose this moment to fail.
  • The PCM connection to the truck may need some very careful cleaning. (PCM connector or 42-pin connector on the engine)
The only time the PCM looks at the GPCM is at start-up - when it counts.

I gave up on the TS. Could not figure out why it would throw the code after the second start after re-connecting the battery. I ended up with an Edge Evolution. Programming kind, rather than a tuner. In other words, you cannot change the programming on they fly. I don't know if that matters, but that is all that seemed to work. I took it to 4 Wheel Parts and they tried several different brands and ended up with the Edge Evolution.
