I'm looking to buy a 2002 F250 with a V-10. I'm aware of the issues with the spark plugs blowing out. When I've researched this issue it seems most of the articles and messages posted online are from 2005 and older. Are the plugs blowing out still an issue for the 4.6, 5.4, and V-10 engines? I'd never heard about this until recently. Since 1998 my company has used a large number of vehicles with all three of those engines and I've never once heard of a plug blowing out. I have a 2001 F150 with a 4.6 and i've never had an issue with it after 91,000 miles.
From what I've read, if you can remember to change the oil periodically on a V10, it will outlast pretty much anything. Me and my bank are really hoping that's true on our truck...
I have a 2002 F350 with the V10. I personally love it. Never ever have had and issue with the engine in 127,000+ miles.
I'd watch out for the exhaust manifold bolts being rusted off...and I mean gone....caput...nothing left. Mine are, and the dealer says $1000 to remove the manifolds (should just fall off) and drill/re-tap the holes. Gonna get it done as soon as I can find some time.
Spark plugs issues were real, but extremely rare. I had V-10s in two motorhomes. They were bulletproof. I would not hesitate to recommend that engine to anyone.
That was the feeling I was starting to get after looking into that issue and talking with people. But I really wanted a diesel anyways. I just found a V-10 at a smoking good price. If the seats had been in good shape, I might have bought it instead of the diesel.
