I am going to look at and listen to an engine for my truck this morning. The engine is still in the truck. What should I do if I decide to buy it? wait for the guy to pull the engine,then pay him or pay him in hopes he will be honest and let me know when he has it pulled? I really don't want to leave the money without taking the engine,but I can understand his point of view if he doesn't want to pull the engine and not having the money for it. what to do?
private seller or recyclers yard??
a yard will most likely be honest, because if he cheats you and you bad mouth him, word will get around fast and he looses business.
private party, is a tossup.
I agree with Steve about a certain portion down. You also might write up an agreement between you and have it notarized when you both sign it....kind of a contract per se.
from experiance, do not leave all the money up front. I did, and the guy distroyed the engine removeing it. when I said I didn't want it like that, he said too bad, as is, pluss I already spent your money. If he won't take a partial payment, keep looking.
thanks for the ideas. I didn't make it to see the engine today,but am supposed to go monday. I will not offer him money,but will give 1/3 if he asks. That's only $100.
If the engine is going to cost $300, I would give him $100 now, and have a mechanic you know pull it for an additional $100. That way you are protecting yourself. And, in this economy, you should have no problems finding a capable mechanic willing to make $100 for pulling an engine as extra $$$.

the problem with that is unless it is a pull your own part yard, insurance regulation stipulate that yard personal only are allowed to remove stuff
You could offer to help him pull it...that way you can make sure he doesn't do any damage to it. It might even be a way to negotiate the price downwards.
I have done what Ken suggested. I went out of state to look at one and told the guy if it was as he represented then I would almost certainly buy it. He did a little prep work on getting it ready to pull. I got there, listened to it run, inspected it, and told him I would take it. He and his brother pulled it (I wasn't much help but looked on as they did it). They loaded it in the back of the truck, I gave him the money and back to NC I went. Good craigslist experience. Good luck with your transaction.
