I have a 352 4v punched out 60 over, edelbrock 600cfm carb, hedman hedders and im still not getting the power i think i should be.Its very slow at low rpms, but it does pretty good at mid rpm.I'll probely change the gears to a lower one and maybe that will help some.Any suggestions on getting better performance on this big block? Also, keep in mind that im only getting about 8 mpg now. Any help appreciated.
It sounds like you've got a timimg problem. Are you using a timing light, vacuum guage, or tuning by ear and seat of the pants feel? If you're using a timing light, you should be set at 6 degrees before tdc. Point gap is .017 and dwell should be 27-31 degrees. It's possible your balancer has "spun", rendering your timing light useless. Also, verify that your vacuum advance is working properly.
I used a timing light and then advanced the distributor a few degrees. Also, the vacuum advance should be good since its a brand new ditributor. The points are set at 16 and spark plug gap at 35.IT will not spin tires from a dead spot but if you get the rpms up high in first then shift into second manualy(auto trans)it will bark the tires with out a shift kit.Its just so slow to launch and doesnt improve until about 3500 rpm but when it kicks in it does great.
wow, your wrong! 352's are fantastic motors mine was rebuilt in 92, it is 35 years strong and still getting 2nd gear rubber! i can get 17 mpg on the hwy with my over-drive as well.
ive got a 69 F-350 with a 390,and im getting only 8 mpg as well! in my case however, ive got a 159" wheelbase,a 10 ft. utility body, and a 12 ft. alaskan pop-up camper,so i would assume my rig is a little bit heavier than yours, not to mention a little more wind resistant! i estimate my truck weighs approx. 8000 lbs. ( give or take),when i got it,it was still tuned to Cal. emissions standards( 6BTDC),since its now smog exempt,i advanced it to 10 BTDC. ive added a dual exhaust and tuned it,when i first purchased it,it only got about 6-7 mpg,its up to 8 now.
the timing is advanced,I have dual exhaust with headers and live in NC so i dont have to worry about emissions, yet.And yes, your truck is about twice as heavy as mine. Thanks for all the input, with the exception of tom, and keep em coming.I still need help.

1964 4-v 352 from a galaxy.
all stock except the following modifications. rv cam, $400.00 spent on reworking the heads, (three angle, etc.), .30 over, 600 cfm manual choke holley double pumper with 1" carb spacer, tall k&n filter. engine has stock exhaust manifolds with heat riser removed and dual exhaust. manual transmission, there are many ways to get od with a manual. 3.73 rear, 30 inch rear tires.
Thanks for the info. Maybe since youre geared lower than me(308), is why i dont think my performance is there but I still wonder about my 8 miles to the gallon which is only gonna get worse when i gear mine. Thanks again to everyone that responded.
