O.k. The story. It was -10 started it and it sounded like marbles in engine. I have an edge on it so I watched oil temp and it started getting to about 200 deg. Dealer thought it was a diaphram sucked up in it and for $1500 would break it down and check. After removing valve covers, they found metal shavings and said the timing chain was shiney and the cam housing was groved and thought the timing chain got loose and did the damage. I asked why and they didnt know unless they broke it down further and it was not worth it to do that. I have a 2004 super crew 5.4 sohc 120,000 miles on it. Said top end was starved for oil for quite some time but it always ran great till now. Always did recomended maint. when I was supposed to.

I would go with a local good used engine. There must be some junk yards in the area. Depending on cost and the good used may come with a warranty would be your better choice. Ask a local garage if they can find and change out the engine. I don't know if you can change it yourself. Kansas City, Kansas? My daughter blew up her chevy there when she was in vet school.
