Reason: made more sence now
I also had this problem when it starts getting cold,
A lot of the problems seemed to be the alternator. Mine was and had it replaced under my extended warranty . if you still have warranty, get the alternator checked an replaced. If you don't have warranty, go get a new alternator and replace it. It will more than likely fix your problem.there was also a TBS on it
Good luck!

Cold Start Fead Hoot-Whistle Noise-built before 1/c

5.4 and 4.6 engines built before 1/28/08 may exhibit a front related high pitched metallic whilstle/hoot noise after a cold soak 4.4 C. Noise may be caused by the grooved nylon FEAD idler pulley.
Service procedure to correct. Replace the nylon FEAD idler pulley 6L3Z-6C348-A Idler Pully.
not sure if changing the pulley is the best thing
I would get a new alt. put in it worked for me.Had 80,000 klm when changed now 130,000 and 2 winters no problem.
I too have this... only when cold... I do have a CAI... I just ignore it till the engine warms up and it goes away.... I did see the TSB on the alternator... strange that that could be the culprit....last thing I would have thought of
well took it in to the dealer today, they has to replace the tentioner pully and replace the belt, all 278.00 dollars, but its quite and runs good, think the belt was going , now it feel like it has no sliping then before

Same here. In cold weather I had the whistle. Replaced the alternator and no problems since. This was about two years ago.
well this is certainly an odd thing. I've been hearing a similar noise with the cold (1st winter with this "new" used 06/4.6). I was thinking along the lines of the vent system in the cab or radio feedback noise.
So the noise is a cold tensioner pully? Too wierd. It goes away pretty quick while driving.
