I have a '98 explorer, up until a cupl days ago, when I had the ignition on the daytime running lamps wopuld come on, now they aren't working and when the key is off, and the light are also off, the high beam light on the instrument cluster stays on all day and night, when the lights are turned on, the high beam light works properly on high beam and goes out with low beam! Any possible ideas where to start or to look at?

 

DRL module under the drivers side front bumper seems to cause a lot of trouble.

 

Ill have to check that out! Is there any way to check that or is it best to replace it? If a replacement is best, does the average autoparts store carry it or is it a FORD only part? Thank You for your help!

Is the high beam indicator ON?
Yes
REPLACE the DRL module. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to B2 .

B2 CHECK HIGH BEAM OPERATION
Observe the headlamp high beams.


Are the high beams ON at full intensity?
Yes
REPLACE the DRL module. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to B3 .

B3 CHECK THE LOW BEAM INPUT
Measure the voltage between DRL module C134-6, circuit 12 (LG/BK), and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 12 (LG/BK). TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REPLACE the DRL module. TEST the system for normal operation.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 12 (LG/BK). TEST the system for normal operation.

No

PINPOINT TEST E: THE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS ARE INOPERATIVE - HIGH BEAMS ON AT REDUCED INTENSITY WITH THE HEADLAMP SWITCH ON
CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE DRL MODULE

Measure the voltage between DRL module C134-6, circuit 1056 (DB/LG), and ground.


Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
REPLACE the DRL module. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REFER to Section 417-01 lighting diags .

PINPOINT TEST F: NO HIGH BEAM INDICATOR IN HIGH BEAM MODE

Place the multi-function switch in the high beam position.

Connect a jumper wire between DRL module C-134-8, circuit 12 (LG/BK), and DRL module C-134-1, circuit 932 (GY/W).
Does the high beam indicator illuminate?
Yes
REPLACE the DRL module. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REFER to Section 413-01 lighting diags .

 

Thank you very much, that info that you provided was very helpful. I unplugged the module for now and the lights are working with the switch as they should, I am gonna hit up a local salvage yard to pick up a used one.
