I was just introduced to this forum today and cannot believe the amount of info that is on here. I am sure this topic already exists, as it seems to be a common problem.....I just cant seem to find it specifically.
I have a 04 F-350 6.0 w/ approx 135k miles. The truck started blowing white smoke out the exhaust, then a puddle of motor oil appeared that was leaking out of the muffler. The mechanic advised me today that the EGR cooler and valve were both bad. I have been told about an EGR bypass or delete. I am trying to consider all my options and am VERY open to suggestions.
Welcome to FTE!!! You will get great advice from the folks on here. There are many options for the delete. You can do a search for it and you will find lots of info on it.
I will throw my opinion in for what it is worth. I would say go ahead and remove the EGR system. The only reason I would consider other options, is if you have local emissions testing. There are ways to bypass it and still pass emissions. I have had one egr cooler go bad that was covered and fixed under warranty. If it goes out again I will for sure delete it. Delete that sucker and it will be fixed for good.
now to awnser the op question. deleting the egr you would also want to look into a turner depending on were you live in the world. some 03/04 will not have check engine lights on some will as a result. theres lots of info on the sight about that.
if you opt to remove it look in to the future will you have to deal with emmision testing?
so if you do delete it youll have issues. so blocking it off may be better for you.
do some research on silica dropout you will need to fix this concern to fix the truck.
also replacing the egr cooler with out fixing the silica issue is a waste. you should also replace the oil cooler... once again goes back to silica issues
This well make one issue go away but will not cure the problem. I wish people would educate themselfs befor dishing out 1/2a$$ advise
Ok, Smart @$$ how else do your make the EGR system bullet proof then? If you dont delete it or block it then it will eventually fail again thats all their is too it.

No, you can still have a fairly dependable truck just by changing your driving habits with the knowledge that it has an EGR system is in there with these trucks. There is more "work" involved in this, but it can still be dependable with the system intacted and operational.
quick question? if i go w/ a egr delete, can i ever reconnect the original valve?
sure you can.if your cooler and valve are still good swap it out with the delete kit. don't know why you would want to though, unless they do an inspection at emissions time.

Ya, true, but i wasnt talking about making a truck "fairly" dependable. If you notice my original post I stated, The only way to ever really "fix" the problem.

I use the term fairly dependable because there are no certain things with vehicles that are massed produced. Even with ARPs and a deleted EGR, your truck may not be dependable. All types of variables come into play here. As you can tell, I've done extensive work with my 6.0 and it still has issues every now and then engine related. I even had head issues after the ARPs were in there. I even had a y-pipe issue(or up-pipe depending on who you talk to). That's why I tend to use fairly dependable.

this is what you are missing its not a FIX. its a bandaid till you start puking coolant from not fixing the real issue.
please dont take it personal Im just tring to offer correct, well practiced and very proven advise.
