Dieselsite makes a popular kit http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=324 but there are others...some people even make up their own. Either way, I think it's a good addition for removing any of the junk you may have running through your cooling system which can clog up your oil and egr coolers and lead to their failure.

I won't get into the EGR delete or bypass kits, but if you want to retain your EGR system for whatever reason there is an alternative to the stock cooler that you may want to consider: http://www.ntshoptools.com/ This cooler is far more robust than the stock piece. Again, my opinion.

I hope that isn't oil coming out of your tailpipe...maybe it's just soot mixed with the moisture in the exhaust because of the bad EGR cooler?
Thanks Steve--I just ordered that coolant filter. I'm on the fence about the cooler. If I modify or replace my up pipe, and block off my EGR valve, it may not be as necessary to "upgrade" my cooler. I think the '03s were a little "better" in any event? My EGR is defnitely coming off (too much to worry about), but I definitely have to make my mods easily reversible.

Bypassing will take the cooler out of the loop, so you shouldn't have to worry about doing anything to the cooler. However, make sure that when you do any weld work with the y-pipe(aka up-pipe) keep in mind that the metal there is weaker and it doesn't take much to leave a crack and a little crack will create a substancial power loss, lots of smoke, and very high EGTs.

If you mean physicall off, you shouldn't have to do that. If you just mean turned off then thats another story. Make sure you don't forget custom tunes to knock out the EGR from the loop, otherwise EPA limp mode here you come.

Unfortunately we really don't know how thorough the new emissions testing is going to be, so it's tough to say whether or not you will have to reverse any changes you make.

Yeah--thanks for the tip. I'm thinking SCT, but not until I pony-up for the ARP upgrade. I am actually going to replace the EGR with a billet insert, and then R&R when it comes time to smog check my truck (hopefully only every-other year as per gasonline vehicles here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia...). I am also crossing my fingers that being an early '03, it won't throw any "hard" codes...

I hear ya... but I don't really want to wait to find out, and it would seem, much as it is today, that some of the rules will change from smog check station to smog check station (some overlook underhood stuff, others get in there with mirrors and magnifying glasses). So it has to be reversible for me.
