On a '00 F250 4x4 7.3L with auto lock hubs, doe sit hurt anything to be driving along and pop the switch into 4x4 if the seal is blown on one or both of the hubs?
Recently my needle bearing wore out and made a vibrating sound much like when you drive a cross those road warning strips and then I would pop it into 4x4 straightening out the shaft i guess and stopping the vibration. I would then pop it off until it started again etc. I then replaced the needle bearings using Guzzles step by step.
I had to manaully get out and lock the hub prior to due to no vacume then repaced the seals.
Does anyone think doing that could've maybe caused some damage in the front end? I now have this clunking sound/feeling like something is loose, or it could be my imagination as it's not that significant.
My owner's manual (2003) gives a limit of 55mph when going FROM 4Hi to 2WD, but no limit when going from 2WD TO 4Hi. I would think that you would not want too much speed (especially if the shaft isn't spinning) because the OEM ESOF hubs don't look too beefy to take a lot of 50mph locks with a stationary axle, but there is no published speed limit for engaging the 4wd.
