I have a 1969 F-100 Ranger, that I purchased from my uncle for a $100. When my grandpa had it new, he had problems with hard shifting, it wont go from 1st to reverse, by the way it is a three speed in the tree. They decided to replace the whole steering column and this just made things worse. I have to shut the truck off, when going from 1st to reverse and the electrical lights that they hooked up is backwards, they hooked up the horn to the turnsignal switch and I haven't been able to find the turn signal wires.
You don't say where you're from but if you're from an area where steel tends to rust, then your shifting problems might be the front cab supports are rusted out causing the the shift linkage to bind. This can be temporarily cured by jacking up the cab and putting a 2x4 block between the cab and the frame and taking it for a test drive.
Wiring is another problem unto itself. Once you find the wires that run the lights, you might want to look into an aftermarket turn signal setup such as a "sigstat 900". It mounts external to the column. It is similar to what is found on semi-trucks. It comes with it's own wiring and is about 50.00 at NAPA.
