Please help me out here. Tired of so many different opinions everywhere I look. I have a 1984 F150 351W with a C-6. Changing the fluid and filter as well as installing a B+M shift kit. What's the proper oil, Type F, Dexron or Mercon? Thanks for now.
By this time of manufacture, pretty much all Ford transmissions were using Dex II/Mercon from the factory. That has been superceded by Dex III, then just Dex Merc. Type F was for asbestos clutches generally, while Dex is for the paper clutches that are more common. The Mercon fluids are Ford's designation, but the Dexron is the more commonly named. Most of the oil manufacturers made it multipurpose, which is why the Dex/Merc designation.
When I changed the fluid in my '86 automatic with OD transmission I used Mercon. The manual recommended Dextron II. The transmission immediately began shifting better than it ever did with Type F. It still does.
When I did this change, I changed ALL the fluid. Drain transmission, replace filter and pan, disconnect trans. cooling line TO radiator, extend the line with a piece of hose to a bucket or pan, refill with 4 quarts, run engine and pour additional quarts in as you monitor the old oil filling the bucket. I used a white 5 gallon bucket with 1 qt graduations marked inside. The oil comes out at about the same rate that you can add it. About 6 to 8 more quarts if I remember correctly.
It was so smooth that, at first, I didn't feel it shift at all. I thought I did something wrong. The auto OD transmission is a notoriously hard shifting unit.
