DO NOT put type F in a 1981 C6. Ford started making the C6's to run Mercon and Dexron II in 1977. Dexron III is the higher and newer equivelant to these fluids so running that is fine. I do not no really what the difference is between the fluids but I know that you can run either one. Plus usually when you buy a bottle of fluid it says Dexron/Mercon on it. Type F was used in C6's through 76 and in C3's and C4's through 79. After that I think Ford started getting away from using asbestos friction disc's and clutches and therefore needed to change fluid type as well.
