Noticed my trailer running lights were not coming on so I started trouble shooting and found out it was a simple fuse.
Oh boy here it comes. Open up the hood of your truck and walk over to the drivers side and look for the brake master cyl. Close to it or right next to your chest will be the power distribution box (with fuses and relays) it's about 4 x 6 in size and black. But, aft to that is another black box about 2 x 5 in size.
This box is full of "trailer only" relays and "fuses".
Check fuse number one and replace if blown. This should correct the trailer running lights.
i can tell you to shut off the truck when you are connecting the electrical plug from trailer to truck. i have a 6 pin connecter and have blown the fuse 3-4 times in 4 years when plugging in when plug was hot. i now shut off truck first... if i remember.

This is in the 1997's owner's manual..... There's a picture that shows it along with the description of the two fuses in the mini-box.
The 98 has the same relay and fuse configuration as the 97, but the 1998 owner's manual does not have this information.
