Trailer Lighting

I have a 2011 F-150. I have towed a couple of trailers and had no issues with the lights. Then, I towed a single axle trailer and the lights have gone hay wire. I have blinkers and stop lights but no running lights. The fuses were checked and they are all fine. As far as the relays under the hood, i am not sure about those. First, how do you check those and i also found a Hi Power relay and 30 amp pink fuse in the glove box. Are these the ones i am supposed to be using when towing? Any help would be great.

I would check the trailer first if the other trailer(s) had all lights. Sounds a break somewhere in the trailer wiring. Chris

You should have relays in your glove box that you need to install under the hood. They will give your trailer brakes and interior lights power.

Sounds like a grounding issue on the trailer. Make sure the ground wire on the trailer has a good solid connection. It's either that or you have a wire that is shorting out some where.

Were you using the 4 way trailer plug or the 7 way? Are you receiving power to the appropriate pin on the truck plug? This is the first step to isolate it as a truck problem or trailer problem.

Is that true about the brakes? I thought the relay was only needed to charge the camper batteries. Pretty sure I never installed the relay and my trailer brakes work.

The relay and fuse are only required for the trailer battery charge feature on the 7 way plug.

I had no interior trailer lights or trailer brakes on mine until I installed the relays. No trailer connected was illuminated on the LCD until I installed the relays in my 2011.

I was using the 4 way. The trailer lights worked on 2 other trucks, just not mine. I also used the 7 way with the 4 way adapter and had the same results. Prior to that i hauled my 20 foot v nose with the 7 way and brakes and it worked fine. I haven't hooked that trailer up yet to see what happened. So I should replace that relay and fuse either way right? And to be sure it is position 9 and 21 under the hood?

ffblack,

Do you have factory installed TBC?

This is what I would do FWIW.

Use circuit tester to check the pins at the 7 way and 4 way plugs at the rear of the truck. Does the running light pin show a voltage?
If you dont get voltage or a light, keeping moving forward checking the security of the various connectors.

I haven't looked at 150's fuse box but i would bet there is a fuse labeled trailer running lights or something similiar. Replace that one and test again.

You are correct the trailer battery charge relay and fuse belong in position 9 and 21.
