I have a short bed F-350 that I use to pull a 31 gooseneck and a 38 Weekend Warrior. With the gooseneck I hardly ever have to air up my bags because axles are center better under trailer . With the toybox I always need to air up when hauling with no toys . With 150 gals water and food and fuel pin weight is about 3200# . When loaded with jeep and two dirt bikes pin weight drops to 2300#. You should take the time and do a test run with your rig loaded with every thing you will have in it , food, water, fuel in both tanks, toys, gear, camp chairs , ice chests, all people in truck , fuel in truck , Then go scale it at a public scales, do all axles , steering than drive axle than each trailer axle . One more than to check is to see what your truck tires are rated for. I looked for the highest rated ''E'' tire I could find ( Goodyear Pro Grade Silent Armor ) 3750#. 285x75Rx16 , I had 295x75R16 Toyos before these but found that the higher side wall height made the tire move side to side in turns or side gust of wind . With these big boxs you need to take care to load them carefully. If I'm not dry camping I will leave that 150 gls of water at home, and don't fuel the gen tank either. Wish you safe trips ,,,, ollllo
Great info! thanks. I just got bags put on yesterday and plan to give it a try this weekend. I'll do just that...weight it fully loaded (except for i don't have water in it yet since it's still icy out) and then unload it in the truck stop lot and weight again. Question - loaded with water, would that add more rear weight (less on the pin) or more front weight (more on the pin)?
I am thinking of adding the airbags to my 2003 F250,CC,LB, 4X4 since i pull a 32Ft 5th wheel. The ride can be very harsh at times and i am hoping this will smoothen it out some. The rear does not sink down too far after hitching, but it is noticeable.
My question is, what brand is the best and easiest to install? And, anyone know the cheapest place to get them? I don't mind paying to have the kits shipped.
Let me know if this is not going to help the ride and if i should install them in the front as well (it wouldn't make send to me, but i don't know)
The weight thing keeps coming up and can be confusing. The only thing Ford guarantees is the truck can stop its GVWR. It puts that in writing in its booklet on towing. It says its Combined weight is the total weight their truck can move down the road , not stop. If a truck can not stop its GVWR, that is a liability issue for the truck builder.
Ford does not care how much you actually strap on. They do care about warranty coverage and things may break or be more highly stressed with more weight. That is just logical. [...] Steve
Question, possibly off topic, but comes to mind while reading this thread: Why does Ford add a Cargo Weight Rating spec to a truck on top of a GVWR and GAWR rating? This payload rating appears to be less than what the truck could handle if only looking at GVWR.
Another way of asking same question:
Where does Truck Mfg's Cargo Weight Rating and CG range wrt to campers come in? Is it just a recommendation that can be exceeded as long as GVWR and GAWR are not exceeded??
By now you might already have your answer on tank location. My water tank 150 gls is in front of axle group and the 40 gls fuel station tank, 20gls generater fuel tank is behind axles . ollllo ,
oK - here are my facts/weights.
08 F250 4wd 4 door - 6.4L diesel short bed
Front axle rating - 5600lbs
rear axle rating - 6100 lbs
gvrw - 10000
gcrw - 23000
my actual weights -
Truck alone
Front - 5020 lbs
Rear - 3500 lbs
trailer - 0
Total - 8520 lbs
Loaded with 5th whl toy hauler -
front truck axle - 5225
rear truck axle - 5545
trailer - 10460
total - 21230
So, how do i fare on pin weight, limits, gvrw, etc etc?
NOTE - The trailer was loaded with the toys i'd carry except water. it is winterized currently...and i think it has a 100 gallon water tank in front of axles. assuming you add in the 800 +/- lbs from water weight, please help me estimate how that'd affect totals, pin wt (%) etc.
also to note, i can adjust the height of my 5th whl hitch if needed. Now it is positioned on the 2nd of 6 from the bottom, so i could lower it a bit if needed (assuming that'd add pin wt). as is, the front edge of the rig is about 3.5" higher than the rear edge when hooked on flat ground.
also, this is with bags installed. unloaded, the bag air pressure is about 8lb, loaded it is about 35lbs. i obviously could go up, but i'm already up more than i think i need to be in the front.
