Has anyone ever used one of these speed reading courses? If so, which one and how useful was it? I read at a pretty good rate, but when it comes to reading textbooks and tech manuals, I lose interest pretty fast. I'd like to learn some techniques to make reading the less entertaining stuff a little more bearable, thus making homework go a little faster and more successfully.
If it's technical (e.g. automotive) and not something like English, I don't know that you can speed read. Too many details.
I've sometimes outlined the texts as I read them. Nothing formal, just some brief points to give me a sense of the overall. If I review them, it sometimes help.
Biggest problem that I have is interest in the subject. If I'm basically not interested in it, I have a lot more trouble. Also, there are some texts, like some teachers, that are just pretty worthless.
Good luck, and I hope that you made it to the end of this post
I took speed reading in school. I found it good for studying. It boils down to only reading the basic words in a sentence. You skip everything else. I just read the noun verb & not much else. Its not good for pleasure reading. You miss too much of a good book. I forgot just what rate I reached in speed reading but can barely turn the pages fast enough if I'm into it. I was top in my class at it. I recommend it to anyone who is studying a lot. It really helped me.
