I know there are many of you who read books.
The story is of this guy who can't even give his used books away let alone sell them, so he decided to burn them.
See, now I like Tom Clancy books (and Clancy is FAR from stupid). I just don't have much time to read--I do most of that here!
Up until my last two years of HS, I used to read voraciously. My sophomore year, I estimated once that I had read in the neighborhood of 40,000 pages worth of books--for enjoyment. Stephen King and Clancy were tops on the list, but there were others. Somewhere along the line I remember reading F451, too.
The most reading I've done recently was about two years ago I read through the Patrick O'Brien series in about 3 months. You know, the one the Russell Crowe movie Master and Commander was based on. The early 19th century sailing lingo can be a little tough to wade through, but there are supplemental texts available for help if you can't figure it out in context. I highly recommend the books.
ok, stupid was a bit of an overstatement, way over statement, he is pretty sharp and i do like him as a person and a writer, i just get irritated at the things he writes about in his books, i about threw out the bear vs the dragon when i was reading it, just to much.
i actually have sat down with clancy and had a group lunch with him before, and talked a few submarine related things with him.
I havent read a book in awhile, I read magazines and a ton of stuff on the net
but burning them? I'd list a lot of 200000 of em on ebay, start at 1 dollar
That's actually a good idea. With 20k books lying around, you gotta figure a few of them are gonna be worth a few dollars. He ought to auction them off in some manner, although a single batch of 20 thou would cost a bit to ship!
I don't know if people actually read any less -- there just are a lot of ways to get books these days
-- Libraries -- I'm a nerd, and I would say that library usage is up
significantly these days. Some of it is for the CDs/DVDs, but people do
pick up a fair number of books. -- and a lot of libraries rent the newest
ones out at first
-- Good ol' amazon
-Wally world and all of the other big box stores
As far as used books, things just change so fast that yesterday's stuff is pretty boring. This is true for both fiction and non fiction. In non fiction, the technology has probably become obsolete, meanwhile fiction describes the current social environment -- which changes as fast as the tech.
I will say that for some time now, the printed word has come in 2nd to the video -- how many people line up to buy the new best seller? However, I don't think that they'll be stopping the presses any time soon.
According to the article I read, he tried to sell them or donate them and got no interest in them. Novels are a dime a dozen and probably not worth shipping cost. Some of the others are obscure reports such as bound report from the 1910 Pan Am Conference. Probably not a terribly exciting read except maybe to a history buff but I doubt that.
