Hello everyone I got a bit of a pickle. I have a 1986 F150 4.9l l6 and I would like to put headers on it. The thing is I have heard with that engine I'd have to change a bunch of stuff because all the emmision stuff. Is this true? Why couldnt I just bolt in on where the manifold was? Thanks for your input.
The main reason is because all of the emissions equipment ties into the exhaust manifold.
If you remove it, most of it won't have any where to go, so you'll have to patch up open ends.
Also, since yours is an '86 (unless you've modified it), it has the feedback carb setup, which is run with a computer. All the emissions stuff gives the computer information. If none of it's hooked up, it'll throw everything way out.
Lastly, the stock intake and exhaust bolt together to provide heat to the carb for fuel atomization. You'll need to rework the system to add something to apply heat.
