My sons' 94 f-250 diesel is shifting up and down on a light throttle around 30-35 mph.If you just take off and run up anywhere past 40 or so,it shifts ok and feels fine.On a light throttle like through town,at 30-35 mph,it will just shift up and down.It goes through the gears OK and shifts into OD and rolls down the road great. It downshifts and upshifts like it should but does the above with the OD light flashing.I pulled codes and got 23 & 67.I was thinking TPS and that is the 23 code.Any advice, suggestions for troubleshooting?
That '94 diesel, is it an IDI or a PSD? Not sure about the PSDs, but with the IDIs you have to hold the throttle on the floor while the self-test is running, otherwise you'll end up with code 23 which is indeed the TPS (also called a FIPL on the IDI diesels).
Code 67 is for the manual lever position sensor (MLPS) on the driver side of the transmission, it's used to tell the PCM in which position you have placed the shifter so it can react accordingly - you may wanna unplug the harness of that and inspect the plug for water intrusion, then blow it all dry and pack it with dielectric grease as a good measure. Or it may be that the MLPS actually went bad, it's a known issue with some E4ODs, not sure if your '94 would fall into those model years affected by it tho...
Also, are you sure it's actually shifting up and down, and not locking and unlocking the torque converter instead? The factory shift schedule of the E4OD places a converter lockup event right in the 30-35mph zone, and that often gets mistaken for an upshift into OD - to verify this try shutting the OD off with the button on the shifter, if the issue is still present then it is the converter locking and unlocking.
OK,we scanned again and got 23 & 67.It is shifting into OD at 30-35 mph and if you are just cruising at that speed,it shifts in and out of OD.With OD off,it just cruises along in 3rd gear.I chaecked the voltage at the TPS and it was 1.3 volts at closed throttle and 4 volts wide open throttle.Does that sound right?I was kinda thinking TPS when it started dong this.
1.3V at closed throttle is too high, you should be between 0.95 and 1.1 volts, so try to readjust the FIPL (TPS) to 1.0-1.1 volts, it will drop the WOT voltage down to 3.7 or so but that should still be alright. Oh yes, make sure you're taking the measurements with the engine all warmed-up.
