tach trouble

Ok, my E4OD problems I beleive to be from the tach.It doesn't work at idle but as soon as you start to rev the engine,it starts working. The tach works going through the gears and going down the highway but when it gets to 1000rpm when slowing down,it just drops to 0.The OD light on the shifter starts flashing and if you are just cruising around 30-35mph,it shifts up and down constantly. If you turn off OD,it does OK and just running through the gears and going down the road,it is fine. What kind of power should I have at the sendor and where do I get one if that is the problem?I couldn't find a listing for the tach sendor on rockauto.

Has the insulation started pulling away from the tach sensor.

mine was doing the same thing. I replaced the tach sensor, and no more problems. The insulation was all pulled away on mine. I'm guessing yours probly looks something like this

Very common, not saying it is your problem but they all eventually do it.

Well it doesn't look that bad but I will give it a closer look and see if the insulation is starting to pull away.

Thanks for all the replies. My tach works as soon as you press on the throttle,at idle it just drops to 0.The OD light starts flashing when the tach drops all the way when you are slowing down.I haven't found a listing at NAPA,Autozone or Rockauto for the tach sensor.

Joe, I don't have anything in my tach wires, so that may be your problem.

Both of our trucks use the same sensor.

Spare Part #

Hi at all,
I bought a 1992 F250 7.3 IDI with E40D just last Friday. I have exactly the same symptoms as 2020 mentioned.
I've scanned the computer and got two codes:
23 and 14

14 says:
Ignition pickup (PIP) was erratic - Ignition Systems E4OD Transmission diesel RPM sensor - Diesel RPM sensor

23 says: Throttle sensor out of range or throttle set too high - TPS

those information i got from Troublcodes.net Trouble Codes OBD & OBD2 Trouble Codes and Technical info & Tool Store. By BAT Auto Technical

I understand that the tacho sensor need to be replaced but my question is can i adjust the throttle sensor or needs it replaced too?
I read that this parts are ford only.
Does anybody can provide the original current Ford part # for it?

Many thanks

when you pull the codes you need to have the throttle mashed all the way to the floor or youll always get code 23

I took the sensor out and cleaned it good. The wires and insulation looked OK so I put it back in and found the connector at the left fender, unplugged it and made sure it was clean and tight. So far the tach is working and the OD light is staying off.
