I have a 75 f-250 4x4 360 c6. I would really like to run a more modern motor. I would appreciate some input on what other options anyone has had experience with. Like in what was needed and who to go to for parts. Thanks.
from what i have been reading on this site th FE is a very good motor to rebuild. why do you want to mondernize, or do you mean to put on modern technolgy. I have a 82 bronco that I demodernized. I had duraspark III for ignition when I replaced the motor, didn't change ci's still used 351w, and went w/ duraspark II. Just makes things a little easier if you break down on the road than trying to mess w/ a computer. Just my opion, free world practice it before we lose anymore.
When I say modernize I mean run an engine that is currently in production. I favor a 460 but I see 351's and 400's were used in this series of F-250's.
Another transmission is no problem. Doesn't necessarily mean fuel-injected. It's just that options and add-ons are everywhere for these motors whereas the FE series is limited in what you can do and parts being made for them. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent motor and Ford should have stuck with it, but time marches on.
FF, I don't think that the 351M, 460, or 351W are still in production. The 351M and 460 were in that year 4X4 truck, there could have been a few 351W's. I don't think you have a grasp on what changing trannys could bring about, since you have two drive trains.
Would you share a little more with us, what exactly you wish to do, and what your concerns are.
I just rebuilt a 352 FE, and there plenty of parts available. Your 360 can be built out as a 390, and you would have about as much power as you'd ever need.
If you have the money, your project can be done.

I didn't realize these other engines were in that year 4x4. I understand about different engine series and bellhousings and spine numbers and the like. Do you stroke and/or punch the 360 out to get a 390? I know intake manifolds are limited from the aftermarket suppliers. I'm primarily looking for towing torque for a 25' Bayliner.
I'm sorry my mistake on that year, meant in the late 70s 4X4s.
Have you pulled the boat with the present setup in the truck? I would think that if the motor isn't tired, it would pull the boat OK.
The 360 & 390 have the same bore, but different stroke, you will need a 390 crank and rod setup. There are some other wild setups with changing the crank and a little boring, you can make that rig pull that boat like a small utility trailer.
You might want to look at Edelbrocks site at the performer kit, cam, intake, carb. although the cam is really all that you need. The engine isn't starving for gas now.
When I rebuilt my 352, I drilled it 30, shaved the heads 30, used the Edelbrock kit, lowered the gear to 2.75, and have plenty of power and it will get 18 mpg on the road.

In addition to crank and rods you're also going to need pistons. Be careful with aftermarket cams, I don't know if it was a fluke, but my brother rebuilt a 360 to a 390 and with an aftermarket cam for some reason kept breaking the rocker arm shaft.
TR, I just learned something, that for the first fifty years of my life I didn't know. You can come up with a spec plan using what you got or willing to go to, and build a hell of a truck. I had always thought that it could be done. I have learned a lot from some good folk here. I have also learned that a lot of what is posted here needs to be double filtered. You get some of these young bucks come around here with a big ole erection, and have to start releasing their wisdom while it's still clear. Ken has put some new boards up in the lobby, and some of them needs to go there for their release. If we can keep this board for helping people in need, and the BS out there, This Site Shall Remain The Best For Ford Truck Owners To Find Answers The They Need.
