97 explorer oil pump

97 explorer oil pump
I am working on a 97 explorer with a 4.0L engine. This thing has been sitting for years and I just started working on it..
I replaced the fuel pump cause it wasn't working and got the truck started and it ran fine for about 2 days. then started running rough so I replaced the plugs wires and coil pack. Now I think that the oil pump is bad cause all of a sudden the valves are tapping. I'm thinking that maybe the oil filer is bad which could be causing the knocking. But I have a new pump and i'm gonna install it.
Is the oil pump directly in the oil pan? Does any one have maybe a manual or proper instructions on how to remove and replace?
I can get the oil pan off no problem but I don't wanna start till someone can tell me 100% that its all in the oil pan.

I would never have run it without an oil/filter change. Before pulling oil pump dump the oil and replace the filter.
Tapping lifter indicate the hydraulic lifters are sticking. You most probably have the X engine(OHV) which is bullet proof.
Some 97's arrived with the SOHC engine that had teething problems.
The pump is in the pan, difficult to get to, no room to remove pan without dropping front diff.
