Oil Pan

Oil Pan
The previous owner of my 97 F350 7.3 was somewhere out West several years ago and stopped at one of the quicky oil change places and had the oil changed. Along with the oil change they also overtightened the oil plug and stripped the threads in the oil pan. He installed one of those oversize plugs that cuts its own threads. This worked pretty good for awhile but has now started dripping pretty bad. I have tried tightening it a little, but it just keeps leaking. I believe I can get a larger plug and cut new threads to match it. I am worried if I do this how will I keep metal shavings out of the pan or how can I get them out if they get in oil pan. I thought maybe some type of magnet that I can move around through the hole? Any ideas. I don't think the oil pan need to be replaced. There should be some way to repair this. Thanks.

usually if they tighten you can change the washer on the plug. After cutting threads I just use mineral oil or solvent to flush it out after. the chips wont go far so a magnet will help get them out. You can also magnetize the tool so chips wont go any where. I use a strong hard drive magnet and wipe it down the bit several times to magnetize it

Maybe gob a bunch of grease on the bolt for when it's first cutting it's threads. Then remove it and clean it off, the shavings like to stick to grease.

I would suggest buying a fumoto valve that fits in the new threads. It has a rubber gasket washer on it or you can swap it out for an o-ring. Then you won't have to take it out again and damage the threads any further.
