I am almost done with my 79 f150 4x4 resto. I have done all the work myself. (exept engine machine work). This was the first Automatic I have ever rebuilt. My suggestion to all that have even thought of doing it youself is GO FOR IT. Mine worked great. I talked myself into doing the rebuild when I priced the rebuild kit. It was $89.00. The parts house said it is the same kit that most of the local rebuilders used for a c6. The kit only comes with 2 of the most common bushings. I replaced all of them! About 5. I also installed new pump gears. most rebuilders don't. I replaced my planetary set because it looked a "little worn", There are also several main springs that I replaced, oh ya rebuilders don't. I spent a total of under $300 on my trans rebuilt including converter and shift kit. 100% of all ? parts were replaced. I feel that if I had used the $89.00 kit like the rebuilders use my trans would have worked for a while. But mine is virtualy brand spanking new!!!!!!!! It only took me about 2 days.(I really took my time). I also got to paint my case with black urethane instead of that cheesy silver paint that comes off on your hands. The best part about it is, I know that it was done right. with all new parts.
travis, i'm impressed. for a long time i've wanted to rebuild mine but haven't gotten the courage to do it yet. mine's going away. like you i want to do it right, buff out the sharp edges, prime and nice paint job.
i was about ready to do it but i guy i was talking with said you have to have a special tool to compress the cluthes or they will spring out and it's a mess trying to put them back in.
how did you deal with the clutch part. did you need any special tools?
i sure would appreceate you help.
thanks!!

you can get all the tools you need at your local parts house or tool stores. get the haynes manual it is a big help. You'll need a couple of big c-clamps to compress the springs. If you are doing a c-4 or c-6 it take no (special tools). good luck! you wont be sorry.
