Horny.

I have a few questions. My horn. Something isn't quite right. When I bought the truck the horn did not work, until one night I was driving through town and it just started blowing, in short and long spurts, so I got out and cut the wire since it was dark. Then one day while the truck was off I was monkeying with the steering wheel for some reason and heard a thumping noise from under the hood. I found out it was the relay. My question is this, why exactly is doing that? The relay seems to work pretty damn good. Is it the horn switch? It's not a big deal to me, it's one of the those little things I could fix or live without. Just curious if anyone had any ideas.

I would say the problem is in the horn button on the steering wheel - everything else seems to be working fine (well... except for the cut wire lol)... Something is causing the circuit to be completed when it shouldn't be - whether it's in the contacts in the button or the wiring, I can't say as I can't see it...

My guess is somewhere in the past a PO replaced the t/signal switch and instead of disconecting the wires from the harness correctly, they just cut the wires and taped them back together. Now the horn wire has been scraped bare and is shorting out on the column. The horn wire/switch grounds the circuit to trigger the relay. That's why you hear a clicking sound.

I like your thinking. It was a fire truck in its previous life and the wires under the hood for the horn have been cut, perhaps a siren was on this circuit, too. But these have been taped back together by the previous owner. I think this thing only had two owners. The fire department and the guy I bought it from. I'll get this taken care of now that I have some input. Thanks a lot, men.
