Horn Relay Question

Horn Relay Question
Can a 6 volt horn relay work ok in a 12 volt system, with 12 volt horns? I have a stock relay for my F1 that was new 4 years ago, used slightly, but then the last 3 years the truck has been getting a complete makeover. Putting it back together now, I converted to 12 volts and installed 12 volt horns. Actually, 12 volt coversion I did before I tore the truck apart, and this relay worked on the 6 volt horns but the horns sounded like they were going to break glass. I've got it wired properly and the horns are grounded, but pushing the horn button I just get a click from the relay. If I put a jumper wire from the battery straight to the horns, they blow ok. Could it be a bad relay from sitting too long, or is it dropping the voltage too much to blow the horns?

Scott, I wouldn't use a 6V relay with a 12V system because the relay coil is designed for 6V and may burn out on a 12V system. You mentioned that you get a "click" out of the relay so you likely haven't burned it out yet - but I would think it's only a matter of time. Go pick up a 12V relay and the peace of mind that comes with not worrying about a fire under the hood.
