64 F-100 Horn problem
The only problem area in my 64 F-100 is the horn, it has not worked since I bought the truck last year. I jumped the horn direct to the battery to see if it worked, it didn't. I replaced the horn, the relay and the brush. When I reconnected the battery the horn honked immediately, without activating the steering wheel horn button. As soon as I removed the horn button the honking stopped. After checking out various things, it seemed the brush was always making contact. The horn button spring and horn button worked normally. I shortened the brush spring by twisting the horn brush clockwise thus compressing the horn brush spring. I reinstalled the horn brush and horn button in the steering wheel, the horn worked perfectly.
This morning I went to start the truck and the battery was dead, (it was a good battery).
I disconnected the horn wires from the relay until I can figure this out.
Any ideas? I'm not an electrical Guru.

Had simular problem w/ 65, found the horn assembly had built up a corrosive type residue that prevented the horn ring to make ground with the horn assembly. Here's a link where FTE member kjvforme posted pic's of a rebuild on the horn assembly for his truck, if you open the pictures he left comments. With the horn assembly on my truck, found there was a contact brush between the horn ring assembly, thus total of 2 bruses. Bottom line, make sure horn assembly has clean surfaces, suggest purchasing an extra brush, seem awfully flimsy.

Is this present?
The horn brush plastic insulator fits into the steering wheel first, then the horn brush fits into the insulator.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Underneath the three tabbed plastic horn button (or horn ring) retainer and flat plate is a round rubber cushion.
If this cushion has disintigrated or has flattened out, this may be the cause.
When you installed the horn button on the wheel, did you remember to install the coil spring?
Are all three tabs of the horn button (or ring) retainer still there, or has one snapped off?
Do you have a horn button or a horn ring? Is this 2WD or 4WD?

Remove the plastic retainer and the flat plate from the horn button, on the other side of that plate is a thick round rubber cushion.
I'll betcha it has flattened out, or has fallen apart.
These parts are the exact same thing as used on 1961/66 F100/250 2WD / 1967/70 F100/350 / 1960/64 Galaxie/Falcon/Comet / 1962/64 Fairlanes and 1965 Mustangs with a generator, and can be found at obsolete parts vendors and from repro parts sellers.
If you need any of these parts, let me know, I'll list the part numbers and who has them.
