Thwack!!!

So, I drive narrow back country roads when I drop my son off at school and every now and then I meet up with a bus coming the other way. Yesterday the meeting occurred at an especially narrow section and we each got over as far as possible.
Unfortunately for me there was a nice big mailbox on my side that stuck out just far enough to clip my tow mirror.

Now I was not going fast at all, however the impact was sufficient to fold the mirror in. The cold weather (20 degrees) made the plastic a bit brittle so the arm cracked and broke a hole just behind the turn signal. Looks like I'm off to order a new passenger mirror from Tasca Ford.

Anyone have luck transferring the cover? I have an FX4 with Sterling Gray covers, not the black or chrome.

I never tried that, but there might be something in the shop manual to show how it's done. I'd check. You might ask one of the guys in your dealership boby shop.

I did that in the city-I hit clipped a bus and cracked the outer housing of the mirror. I will live with till the winter breaks. Chris

I just added the chrome caps to my towing mirrors this fall on my 06

You need to take the glass off to start with. I took a long flat blade screw driver and slowly worked it in between the mirror bracket. You need to be careful because if you are to forceful with glass will break, just take your time and work it from two different sides.

Once the glass is off there are 4 torx screws that need to be lossed, you will see what I am taking about once the glass is off. Once they are lose that will give you some play in mirror housing and then you need to release the clips that hold the skull cap on. there are 4 clips total, one is each corner or about so. Again take a flat blade screw driver and stick it into the holes in the mirror housing and work the clips down while slowly pulling/wiggling the skull cap loose. Once it it off just push the new ones in to place while making sure you align the new tabs to the mirror.

I have done it a few times so it wasn't to hard. Just take your time, if you in a rush and trying to get it done fast there is a good chance you will break it.

For me I find it best to tilt the glass all the way to one side so that you can see behind it better and then can work the screw driver back there. The skinner screw driver the better. Once you get the 2/3 little clips to relase from the side that you are working it will just kind of come off then. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Thanks for the tips. I'll likely wait until Spring too; nice to know it can be done.
