Mirror disassemble

OK,here is what I want to do.I need ideas and advice.

I have power telescopic mirrors on my 01. I want to make them 3" narrower, but still telescope some. My idea is that if you could just get rid of the little extra, that 3" between the mirror and the base, the mirror would look better. And the truck would be 6" narrower.

So, how does the mirror lens come off, #1?

And once the lens is off, and the mirror off the truck, can the mirror be disassembled?

Thanks guys and gals.

with all the mirror mods people have done, surely someone has some advice, here. Or the forum is just so busy I got bumped to bottom before anyone seen it.

Well...first let me say no...I haven't removed a mirror...but I do know it can be done because guys have swapped mirrors out before. Plus, I have a passenger side unit sitting in my workshop...as a spare.

Now as for taking it apart...you can take anything apart if you're careful and patient.

As for wanting to reduce the length of the two support tubes...good luck pal.

I guess if you're a really mechanically inclined you can do it....my gut call is that unless you can fuse plastic back together its gonna be a bear.

I do have to agree that it would look cool.

Joe

looking at it on the truck, i was thinking that i might be able to take a dremel to the pivot point, and shorten it on that end. Like racer said that part is aluminum and the rest plastic, so I would guess there is a screw somewhere holding the arm to the plastic base. The area closest to the door. i have to get it apart to really figure it out.

Good gosh, don't rip off the front, take off the back. The cover on the back of the mirror comes off with a little coaxing. Pry gently with a small screwdriver and look for the fastners. They are just little clips you have to push in. Do a search in this forum on painting the mirrors, and there should be instructions in one of them on how to remove that rear cover. The mirror assembly it self is bolted to the door with 3 ten or eleven MM nuts from the back side of the door frame. Open the door and look for some rubber gromets in the inside of the doorframe where the mirror mounts. You will have to pop of the little trim panel and they are underneath.

-edit- There is actually one model of the ford towing mirrors where you actually have to purchase that rear cover separately, or re-use your old one when you replace mirrors.
