I GOT A 64 F-100 WITH AN INLINE 6. i WOULD LIKE TO SWAP TO A V-8. i DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START LOOKING WITH THIS OLD OF A VEHICLE. i ALSO DON'T KNOW IF THE TRANNY WILL MATCH UP(BOLT PATTERN). ARE THERE KITS OUT THERE. iF NOT HOW DO I GOT MORE POWER OUT OF THE 6 THE TRUCK WILL NOT GO OVER 50MPH. i HOPE SOMEONE OUT THERE HAS DONE THIS AND POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
You should be able to get more than 50 mph out of your six. I just rebuilt my 66 I6 240 cid and, even with the low rear gearing, it cruises hi-way speed no problem. Pics are on my site. If yours is original it would be either a 223 or a 262 cid., but regardless, it's probably tired. A compression test may help dtermine it's condition. If it has good compression (120-150 psi) then maybe it just needs a good tune-up or carb rebuild.
As for a v8 swap...there are many people that have performed this task. You need to decide if you want a stock engine in there or a later model offering. If you opt for the latter, engine mounting kits are available but pricey. I hope this helps.
I don't know how bad you want a new engine, but I think that you have a starving problem. Your engine is not getting a full line of gas. If you were putting in a qt. of oil a day, and down to three cyl. you should still be able to get over 50mph.
Until you find your swap: Your fuel pump could be shot, or the line clogged. I'd work on the clog theory first, because you can buy a new pump, and engine and still have a clogged line. Start at the carb. work back to the pump. Does your pump have a filter canister, (some do) change it, there is a rubber line under the left rear cab corner. Cut it and with an air source blow air back into the tank. Have a new piece of hose to replace the cut one with.
If you are confident that your lines are clear, and the truck is no better, get a new fuel pump.
I'll bet a good breakfast, that with clear lines, and filters the truck will 75 or 80 no problem.
