I got a 64 F-100 and can't figure out the I-6 motor size. I've been told it looks like a 300, but VIN says different and I'm not sure if it's orig. or not. Also can i make this motor run somewahat compareable to a 302 or should i swap i would like to keep the 6 if i can make it run? If I can't make it run does anyone know where to get the items for the swap? If I swap with the tranny work its 3 in the floor(thats all i know on it, don't know how to figure size)? If I can make it run does anyone know where to get high performance parts? This is my first attempt at anything like this i want it to be a daily driver but I want it to go over 65mph which it doesn't do now. If anyone out there can help me I would really appreciate it.
You can put a 302 in there, but the 300 Six is a better deal. Better milage and just as much power, but far more reliability. I dont know how to tell between the 240/300, probably you will see that in the Manuals. Go to the Public library for manual's if you dont have your own.
I have heard good stories about the I6 power, after all the 300 I6 is only 2 cubic inches smaller than the 302 With the longer stroke it should have a lot better low end torque. The upgrades available are quite numerous. Headers, better intake manifold, better flowing air cleaner ,improved ignition system, different rear end gearing, better carb etc etc.
Check out www.clifford performance.com, you can get a catologue from them especially for 6 cylinders.
I am sure you will also get some ideas here from those who love and have built I6's. Good luck in the project.
I had a 240 six in my 74 4x4 and it ran like a dog until I bought an adapter from Advance Adapters and installed a Holley two barrel carb, then it ran great. To make a long story short, when the 240 wore out I replaced it with a 300 ( same block and heads as 240/different crank and rods). I put a Clifford 4 barrel manifold and headers on it and it ran like a V8.
I believe you noted that your '64 I-six has a 3 speed on the floor. I wonder if one of the newer truck 5-speed trannys would adapt to your engine. Paired with the right rear end ratio, I think it would solve most or your problems.
you can make a six run well if you have a 64 it is probably a 223 .that is what i have in my 64 it has a 4bbl carb and dual exh you can get six parts at www.cliffordperformance.com i have gotten several things from them they are very helpful Kid
It probably isnt a 300 since they ddint come along til 1965. It is probably a 223 or 262(more likley a 223 since thats standard) If it says "J" in the vin number it is a 223. i have a 223 in my 1964 and it runs great especially when its rebuilt.
I'am not sure but I think the 300 has a cover
on the drivers side to adjust the pushrods
were the smaller sixes did not, it's been
a wile since I've seen one.
Like some have said, the engine is probably a 223, but I think just about every engine ever made has been transplanted into these trucks.
In 1964, Ford put three I-6 motors in the F-100. They are the 144, the 223, and the 262. It seems that the 223 was the most common of these.
The earlier motors (144,223,262) had the motor mount located on the front and it connected to the center of the front crossmember. The 300 had 2 mounts on the sides.
The 144 had the distributor on the left side, and the 223/262 had it on the right. I think the 300 and 240 had it on the left.
The oil filler cap on the 223 was on the front top of the valve cover, while the 262 oil cap was about midway of the valve cover.
This information should help you narrow it down a bit. Good luck.

i'm sorry i have to disagree with these boys.
ive ran both a 300 and a 302 in half tons
theres no doubt a 300 will lug good
a 302 has twice the power...
i advanced the timing a bid and set the carb and my 302 beat my friends 350 bowtie...the 300 would hardly lay any rubber....
if youare gonna pull or haul....300..for everyday driving they 302 will be better....btw my 302 did 23 (imp) mpg.....so....it does fine on fuel

I found out the hard way this week that the 240 and 300 heads are not the same. (and have a 240 head for sale cheap as a result!)
