Anyone ever go into the tilt-steering mechanism.
I have a78 f150 2wd. with tilt/cruise. I had
eliminated all the slack on the bottomend via
rebuilt box/tie rods/ and a lower bracket to
keep the lower box shaft from moving. I have
a little(i.e.-about 1"inch slack when measured
on the steering wheel) slack/play. from looking
at the ford shop manuel. the list several special
tools to remove the mechanism. Anyone with
experience or tips is appreciated. I'm looking
at doing something about this in the next couple
of days.
Rob, I have yet to install the tilt on my truck, but can't imagine slop in the wheel itself. I am guessing here; I suspect that the wheel is connected to the shaft and has a knuckle where the hinge area is, to allow the wheel to tilt, and continue down the column, through the firewall, to the ragjoint and steering gear. This would be the same as a none tilt, except the knuckle. Have someone move the wheel while you watch for movement at the rag joint. My guess is you will find your movement there.
Would you give that a check and let us know what you find?
