Push button only needs the relay, a wire to the positive terminal or the starter relay, and one to gound, with the switch in the middle of the positive wire before the relay. the ground goes from the relay to a good Frame ground . Wiring it to the starter relay is so that you can't accidentally activate the GP's with the truck off and key out.
That relay is mounted down beside the voltage regulator behind the passenger side battery.
Purple wire needs power to activate the relay, I like to pull power off a fuse that is only hot when the key is on, run it to a momentary switch, then out and connect where the purple wire is now.
The current draw of the relay coil is small, so the wire can be 16 AWG from the fuse to momentary switch to relay.
Done wiring.
Now to operate, turn the key on, push momentary switch for 10 seconds, start engine.
With the usual temps you see in Florida, you probably won't need 10 seconds, you can adjust that time as you get used to the system.
Thanks Dave,I tested the relay and I do belive its toast! The small ground across from the purple wire dosent have a wire looks like it never had one connected, ill solve that when I pick up a new one next week
If there is no ground wire on there, it will not work.
Caution here.
The starter relay and glow plug relay look like each other with one exception.
Near both of the small terminals on the starter relay you will see a small S and I in the case, one by each small terminal.
The glow plug relay does not have those labels near the small terminals.
The starter relay grounds through the mounting screws, one end of the trigger coil is attached to the mounting plate, the other end to the small S terminal.
The glow plug relay grounds through the second small terminal, both small terminals are where the coil windings terminate.
Which wire goes on which terminal makes no difference, but they both must have wires on them.
If you have no wire on the second terminal, it is possible that someone used a starter relay to replace the glow plug relay, and moved the ground connection down to the mounting screws.
AH-HA! When I got the truck the guy said he had a new relay put in it,it worked for me only for a few days, the light came on inside one morning and stayed on a long time, then has never worked since.Thats when a so-called mechanic I knew put new GPs and wired it direct to the battery. It looks Identical to the starter relay. Thanks! Im learning alot
The starter relay can be used.
You just have to make sure the mounting screws are grounded and the purple wire is on the S terminal.
That plate where the glow plug relay is mounted is mounted on the plastic inner fender.
So the only way anything on it is grounded is through added ground wires.
Mine were in bad shape, last fall I ran new grounds to the voltage regulator, glow plug relay, low vacuum sensor and horn.
Now the horn works better, the batteries charge better and the glow plug relay works better.
NAPA has them both listed as the same price.
And it you don't know about checking for the small S and I, in parts books that look the same, even though the numbers are different.
So most people just assume they are the same part.
The only difference is how they ground the trigger coil.
After years of vibration and weather, with a fair amount of road salt in the winter, I replaced all my grounds and battery power to the glow plug relay, upgraded the alternator to glow plug relay power wire and reworked most of the wiring on the passenger side last fall.
I used the glow plug relay positive terminal as the power distribution point since it was closer to the battery.
Also cut out a lot of excess wire that Ford had used in an attemp to make the amp gauge work, which has never moved.
I find an after market volt gauge is of more use to me anyway, it gives a better indication of how much power is in the battery.
