i recently put a new holly carb on a 400 and went with the manual choke but i'm not sure if it's me or the choke but it's seem to be a real pain to operate. thinking of putting the electric choke on there, would like to know if anyone has used one and what there opinions are.
I just built an engine for my 78,302 from a 5.0 and went with a holley 670 street avenger carb with electric choke,it works great and I wouldn't hessitate to do it again.the truck can sit for a month and one pump and turn the key and its all done.
sounds great, think that's what i'll do, do i need to use the old heater tube? or is it all electrical? would i need the internal vacuum or external vacuum? alot of questions i know but them ppl have a habit of not sending everything you need to do a job.
well the choke on mine is 100% electric, self contained by the looks of it.I just hooked it to the factory wire for the choke, that would be the rubber two wire plug that is on the passenger side of the engine,green/white wires.I just used the power wire, the choke on mine is grounded to the carb.
when i bought my truck it had the original 302 in it and someone converted the 2bbl with a kit to manual choke, straight to the garbage can that went, manuals do work,I know because people have told me so haha, but never on anything I've ever owned.
it works as it should i guess but i have to play with it while constantly turning engine over, it starts right up when cold but after it warms a bit and turn it off for awhile , its a pain to find where it needs to be for it to start up again.
I converted my MC 2bbl over to a manual choke and didn't have issues. Of course a manual choke is going to be more work in the cold than when its warm out. My truck had a thermo choke on it before.
If you do decide to go with the electric choke conversion on that holley make sure you get the dechoke kit too. It is just a little piece that you'll need, I don't know why it doesn't come with the electric conversion kit, but it doesn't and you'll need it.
