choke problems

choke problems
i have a 79 f250 with400 and 2150 2bbl. sometimes it hard to start. if i pump it a few times in the morning it starts okay and goes to high idle. but as soon as i touch the gas it kicks down and will die. then i must keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. sometimes when its hot i have a hard time starting it too. the choke is not staying closed long enough i think. what is the best way to set this choke? the choke pulloff is adjustable one. also the choke coil has tubes and electric wire.
